The Toxin-Free Diaper Bag Checklist: 10 Essentials for Rookie Mamas

Rookie Mama, this is for you.

โ€œDid you bring diapers?โ€. This was my favourite soundtrack during those magical intense newborn months. We donโ€™t want to be unprepared when we are out and about, now do we? My gift to you: My definitive checklist to always have everything handy to leave the house in a rush.

The Golden Rule: Prep the Night Before

Between feeding schedules, sleep deprivation, and always searching for the car keys, thereโ€™s nothing worse than the "crying soundtrack" when youโ€™re trying to pack. Always keep your bag pre-stocked and ready by the door. And when selecting items, remember the rule: organic cotton for anything in direct contact with their delicate skin.

The Conscious Checklist: My Toxin-Free Ten

The Changing Station

  1. Diapers: Eco by Naty Diapers. Check my post on Best Toxin Free Diapers for more toxin-free alternatives.

  2. Wipes: Water Wipes (99% water is the cleanest option).

  3. Diaper Balm: Babo Botanicals Cream. Available on Amazon US but currently unavailable in EU. For those of you in Spain I recommend Pasta al Agua de Ozono as an alternative.

  4. Changing Pad: A travel changing mat made of organic cotton. Mine is from Cam Cam Copenhaguen, with a practical inner pocket.

    The Feeding & Comfort Zone

  5. Feeding Bottle: Comotomo or a glass bottle with a silicone sleeve such as Lifefactory.

  6. Bandana (2x): A 100% organic cotton bandana, acting as the perfect absorbent shield for drool and milk spills.

  7. Water Bottle: Munchkin or Puraโ€”durable, non-plastic options for when water is introduced.

  8. Dummy (Pacifier): Natural rubber options are the best, like the lightweight Bibs Dummy (my kidsโ€™ favourite and widely available).

  9. Muslin Cloths (x2): At least two 100% organic cotton muslins (Liewood or similar). Essential for quick cleanups or breastfeeding cover.

  10. Full Change Outfit: Pack a body, top, bottom, and tights. Pro Tip: Pack the entire outfit into a small, reusable Ziplock-style bag. Believe me, you will thank me when there is a full blown code brown and you are in no mood to scramble through your bag looking for a full change.

Backpack Must-Haves

Choose a lightweight backpack with these features for convenience:

  • Side Pockets: Perfect for the baby's bottle or your water bottle.

  • Front Pocket: Dedicated space for the dummy and its protective case. My backpack in particular had an insulated pocket which is helpful when you introduce solids.

Backpack Recommendations: Backpack/Diaper Bag: I love the Pomelo Best. Its smart design and generous capacity keep everything perfectly organized, which is the key to finding things instantly when time is truly of the essence.

You Got This, Mama.

These early, beautifully intense years are magical and truly fly. Remember to be kind to yourself and prioritize your own wellbeing, seeing friends counts as self care! Check my post on Tiny Selfcare practices.
