Madrid has recently hopped onto the healthy organic wagon with eco alternatives gradually sprouting around town. The paradox is surprising, bearing in mind that Spain is one of Europe's leading organic producers, yet most of its organic produce is sadly exported.

I went through that initial clueless phase of not knowing where to find all the fancy sounding new ingredients when I converted to an anti inflammatory diet. Ever since I was diagnosed with leaky gut and an autoimmune disorder, I have been investigating the best health food stores and organic shops in town.

Madrid is my hometown and where I trained as a culinary chef. Over the years I have discovered many organic, eco shops and health food stores where I stock on fresh ingredients weekly to create delicious nourishing recipes. This shopping guide will help you navigate the best options in Madrid, so you can find everything you need for your healthy recipes.

Fruit and vegetable baskets and farm to table alternatives

Dehesa el milagro - This organic farm located in the region of Castilla La Mancha delivers organic baskets Tuesday through Friday. Products include a wide range of seasonal fruit and vegetables, organic fed meat, as well as dairy produce.

Agroboca - Online organic shop selling customizable seasonal fruit and vegetables baskets delivered daily.

La Colmena dice si - Local agriculture aggregation website where you can sign up and order local seasonal products in you area depending on your postcode. I have personally never tried it, but have heard great things about this model.

Vaca Negra- Family run business offering great organic meat delivered to your home every tuesday. Whenever I feel the rare meat crave, this is the sole place I order from.

Health food stores (herbolarios) and supermarkets

There is a wide range of health food stores and zero waste shops in Madrid, I have hand picked my favourite ones just for you. 

Naturitas - My go to online store for food supplements, superfoods and personal care products, great value for money and impeccable delivery service.

Salud Mediterranea - One of my favourite health food stores in Madrid, with three stores spread around the city as well as an online shop. You can practically find everything you need in one single place.

Herbolario Navarro - With over two hundred years tradition, this well known food store in Spain has stores all over the country. Check their online store or pop by their shop in La Castellana to stock on some healthy ingredients.

Herbolario Buda - My preferred health food store, the owner Santiago has amazing recommendations and is always willing to help with my unusual requests. I always stock here on Kookie Cat cookies for when the sweet crave kicks in and I have no time to bake.

Espacio Organico - The real deal if you are looking for your organic supermarket soulmate. An eco food concept in itself; with its own restaurant, holistic centre hosting interesting workshops and yoga classes, and recently launched online shop. My go to place for a full shopping spree.

Bio C Bon - Scattered around Madrid city centre, this french born organic supermarket has a good product offering though slightly limited for my tasting. Good option for a grab and go when you are missing that ingredient for your healthy recipe.

Carrefour Bio- Carrefour supermarket has a Bio section with a great product offering and good value for money, also available to order online.

Zero Waste and Bulk Shops

I am a growing follower of buying zero waste and trying to reduce my waste and packaging levels to a minimum. Watch this space for more shops to come soon.

Casa Ruiz - Beautiful bulk store with several shops across Madrid and Barcelona offering anything you might need without packaging. Be sure to bring your cotton bags or glass jars to stock your pantry.

Unpacked Shop - Petite neighbourhood zero waste shop with a wide range of bulk ingredients and great personal care products.
